As a followup to their preparation of a master plan for Grand Avenue in Los Angeles, Suisman Urban Design and Olin Partnership were asked to proceed on the design development of the central segment. This linear green space, the "Esplanade", is a 42' wide promenade running down the center of the avenue. Modeled on Barcelona's famed "Ramblas", the Esplanade contains cafes, bookstalls, kiosks, fountains, seating, trees, and artwork. The distinctive canopies are actually multi-purpose elements.
