In 1984, Doug Suisman and fellow architect James Mary O'Connor won an Honorable Mention at the national competition to redesign the central waterfront of West Palm Beach, Florida. They proposed a transformed lakefront park, with a new urban center at its core. The scheme extended Clematis, the principal shopping street, to Lake Worth via a sequence of urban spaces. The waterfront was envisioned as a series of green islands, culminating in the Ecology Gardens at the center.
